Home Safety

As we age, our vision, hearing, balance and mobility change. These changes are complicated by the presence of a dementing illness like Alzheimer's disease. Although people with Alzheimer's disease lose their mental abilities at different rates and to varying degrees, they are placed under great risk because of their losses. They may experience trouble telling the difference between safe and unsafe conditions. It is thus important for the caregiver to provide a safe home environment. Doing so can prevent serious accidents and injuries from happening.

Generally speaking, the house should be kept as simple and comfortable as possible. Clutter and noise can cause confusion and agitation. Begin by examining the different rooms in your house. Be sure to include the outside area as well.

We also strongly urge families to register the patient in Safe Return, a national identification program that helps to locate and return lost individuals.
